Starting a Team
Teams can form in private homes, schools, after-school programs, or through any youth organizations. Almost half of the teams in Oregon meet in private homes. Starting in May, a team can register nationally with FIRST®, based in Manchester NH. Learn all about getting started at FIRST – Start A Team

Each year, the Annual Challenge is released in August. Once the challenge is revealed, your team can start problem-solving!
See if your new team can qualify for financial assistance before registering! Financial assistance applications are accepted Mid-May through mid-September (or when funds are exhausted). If you are interested in sponsoring Oregon teams, or ORTOP we’d love to hear from you!
After you’re registered nationally, you can register for local tournaments with ORTOP. Tournament Registration begins in October. Participating in a local tournament is a key component of the FIRST LEGO League program. Our coaches tell us that teams learn just as much on the day of a tournament as in the 6-8 weeks beforehand.
Starting in 2017-2018 Schools and organizations will be offered a Season Pass/Classroom option by FIRST. At this time organizations that choose this option WILL NOT be eligible to participate in Oregon tournaments. We hope to be able to change this in future years. At this time each team at a school or organization must be registered as an individual team to participate in the tournaments.
