ORTOP believes meaningful STEM opportunities should be available to every young person. We recognize the root causes of injustice and how policies and systems have historically excluded many communities from STEM education and career opportunities, particularly communities of color, rural communities, girls and gender-expansive youth, students with disabilities, and students from families with limited incomes. Expanding opportunity requires addressing the conditions that created and continue to sustain these disparities—not simply inviting students into systems that were not designed with them in mind.
STEM For Everyone
Oregon’s future depends on the ideas and abilities of young people in every part of the state. As technology continues to shape our economy and daily lives, meaningful STEM learning can help students build confidence, imagine new possibilities, and contribute to the communities where they live. When opportunity is limited by geography, income, or identity, Oregon loses talent, creativity, and leadership that could benefit us all.
Expanding opportunity requires different approaches in different places. ORTOP builds strategic regional partnerships in rural Oregon, connects mid-sized communities with STEM hubs and nearby resources, and works with schools and community organizations to reach students in urban neighborhoods. Programs such as Girls’ Generation and partnerships with culturally specific organizations help us reach students who have not always been welcomed or represented in STEM.
We are proud of the progress we have made, but we know this work continues. With each season, we are expanding our reach, strengthening local relationships, and creating more opportunities for students historically excluded from STEM. By listening to communities and investing where opportunities have been limited, we are working toward an Oregon where every young person can contribute their talents and share in the possibilities created by science, technology, and innovation.
